It had dropped down to around freezing at night, but it warmed up quickly in the morning.
The skies were clear. There was a dusting of snow on the highest peaks due to a storm a
couple weeks earlier, but that was it.
We drove north on Highway 89 to South Lake Tahoe, then continued north on Highway 89 to
Emerald Bay to hike to
Granite Lake.
After the hike, we drove back south on Highway 89. We passed a few vibrant yellow aspen
stands, some of the few remaining in the area (most were already bare). We stopped by the
Raley's for some ice cream (we promised the kids). Afterward we went out for dinner (yes,
ice cream before dinner) at Bangkok Thai Cuisine (on Highway 50 at Sierra Boulevard) with
my friend Nancy.
After dinner we made the half hour drive back to Sorensen's. In each cabin at Sorensen's
is a guide book, Alpine Sierra Trailblazer which I recommend. I liked it enough that I
decided to buy it at Sorensen's (they have a small set of books they sell at the front office).
It is by no means a comprehensive book, but it provided some brief descriptions of some hikes
I'd never seen before. While I was in the office buying the book, a just-married couple
checked in; they were spending their wedding night here. They picked a great place.
