Usually we avoid traveling on Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends to avoid the crowds on the road and the trail. But we had been itching
to return to the mountains after completing the JMT in early August. An earlier car-camping trip hadn't panned out. So we made a last ditch effort to go to the Tahoe area. Camping was out of the question, as all the campgrounds were surely full. The ones which were first-come first-served weren't an option, either, as we wouldn't be able to leave until Friday afternoon at the
earliest. But much to my surprise we managed to find a reasonably priced house rental
in Meyers (south of South Lake Tahoe) even on this long holiday weekend.
We decided to try to avoid the traffic by not leaving until after dinner on Friday. I wanted to leave around 7:30pm, but we didn't leave until 8:30pm. We managed to avoid most of the traffic, though there were a few delays. Still, we made it to Meyers in under 4 hours.
