Due to unavoidable issues, we arrived at the international
terminal after 10pm for our 11:20pm flight, but
there was absolutely no one in line at the counter, and
we breezed to the gate, where we saw dozens of members of
the United States Paralympic team gathered.
We'd specifically scheduled our trip to avoid the Olympics
in Sydney. Unbeknownst to us, the Paralympics were scheduled for
the exact time we'd be there. I hadn't even known what the Paralympics
was before this trip. As it would turn out, the Paralympics wouldn't
cause us any problems other than on our flight from SF to Sydney.
The airplane, perhaps because of added wheelchairs and other equipment
for the Paralympics team, was simply too heavy. We sat there waiting
in the aircraft by the terminal, until they informed us that they
were going to have to unload some fuel. No easy task -- they had
to first bring a tanker truck over to do so. As you'd expect,
they never really gave us the full story, making us think we'd
be taking off real soon now. Instead, we endured two and a half
hours of waiting before we finally departed.
The flight takes over 14 hours. We got maybe a couple hours of
sleep, in between watching Frequency (great movie!) and Rookie
of the Year.
Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean we crossed the International
Date Line, and so we "lost" Tuesday. But we'd gain it back on
the return flight, landing virtually before we took off.
