We decided to go into Adelaide to do some shopping. We got up
early and it was only about 9am when we parked and stopped by
a coffee shop. We asked them if they knew of any outdoor recreation
stores and one man offered us a lot of detailed help, along with
a street map. After we stopped for breakfast we started to look
at the stores he'd pointed us to. We were a bit disappointed at
first, as we couldn't find one store, another was closed, and
still another didn't look like anything we were interested in.
Finally, we found the last store he'd mentioned and it was perfect.
We stepped into a Paddy Pallin store and it was just like walking
into a mini REI store. I bought some stove fuel, since I couldn't
bring it on the plane and we needed it for Kangaroo Island. I
even found a new rain jacket (I'd been wanting to buy a new one
for months). We spent some time there, buying all sorts of stuff.
The great thing was that the prices were generally cheaper than
what we were used to paying in the States.
We continued shopping on this street called Rundle Mall. We stopped
at a food court for lunch. There was some big modeling platform
and show going on which made it hard to navigate the sidewalks.
It became more and more crowded during the day, and it heated
up as well. It was much warmer than the previous day.
We passed by a camera store. Curious, I stopped in and took a
look. Cameras in Australia are not cheap. Probably because they
have to import them. My theory is that anything they can make
in Australia is inexpensive, but anything they have to import,
like electronics, is not. Jean was thinking about buying a portable
CD player, but decided not to after realizing it was made for
220 volts.
Jean found some nice stores to shop for clothes and I finally
found a map of Adelaide (it was quite hard to find for some reason).
It was hard to finally pull her away and head back to the car
so we could leave before rush hour.
One unexpected thing I discovered about Adelaide is that it has
a Chinese mayor (Alfred Huang). And the city has a noticeable
Asian population while walking along the street, though nothing
like the Bay Area, of course. I'm sure this doesn't really fit
your perception of Australia, as it definitely surprised me.
Kaesler winery
Kaesler cottage
We drove back to Kaesler and took a nap before deciding to have
an early dinner. We found out they didn't serve dinner until 7pm
at Kaesler and the menu didn't look all that great, so we decided
to take a drive. We found a nearby Chinese restaurant, Golden
Dragon. It had a huge wine list and did great take-out business
while we were there. The food was excellent, too. We had the beef
with special sauce and a scallops dish.
After dinner we stopped at a gas station to get ice cream! Then
we went back to our cottage and watched Die Hard 2 on television.
Jean fell asleep before the end of the movie. Afterwards I could
tell the cottage next to us were watching, as well. They turned
off their TV soon afterwards and then we were fast asleep.
