After breakfast we broke camp while the kids across the road were doing the limbo.
Afterwards we made the short drive to the start of the Lava Bluffs Trail.
We drove over to the visitor's center. It's a small center and we didn't find any food
other than a vending machine. I asked about winter activities. The road past the North Grove
is closed, but the North Grove is open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. I'd definitely
be interested in coming here for winter, or fall (the dogwoods are supposed to turn color).
Jean stayed in the car while I did a short hike on the North Grove Trail. It's just as well, since I would have driven her crazy, stopping every
2 minutes to take a picture.
We drove back to the Bay Area, stopping briefly in Angels Camp. Now that I know about
Calaveras Big Trees, I definitely plan to revisit in fall and winter. It has two advantages -- it
is relatively close to the Bay Area (under 3 hours), and it is relatively low elevation (Oak Hollow
campground is 4400 feet), so you don't have to worry about acclimatization. It's not nearly as
nice as Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks, but it does have some nice sequoias and it works as a
great short weekend trip.
