After breakfast, we took the 11:15am shuttle up the Stehekin Valley Road.
Stehekin has the distinction of being the only town in the mainland state
of Washington that you can't reach by car. While there are no roads to
Stehekin, there are roads in Stehekin; the main road travels about 9 miles
up alongside the Stehekin River. A flood in 2003 washed out portions of the
road, so it stopped at the Stehekin Valley Ranch while we were there. There
are plans to make the road passable beyond that again, however. The road
(when passable) reaches the southern edge of North Cascades National Park.
The bus driver was very friendly. He stopped at the pastry shop (about 2
miles up the road) for a few minutes, and encouraged us to go in and try it
out. Everything there is excellent. You'll find the usual pastries
(donuts, scones, etc.), along with cookies, ice cream, soups, salads, and
sandwiches. It's a great place to stop before or after a hike (we would do
both).
After our morning snack, we went on a hike on the
Rainbow Loop Trail.
