We got a late start, but leaving at 2pm on a Wednesday from the Bay Area
isn't such a bad thing. Work has
progressed on turning Highway 180 into a freeway in Fresno, and that saved
us a few minutes. It used to be that you had to slog through Fresno street
traffic for miles, but it is much better now (with more freeway still to
come). In any case, even with two short stops, we arrived in Grant Grove
around 6:30pm, plenty of time to choose a nice camp site. We settled on a
site at Azalea campground. We had plenty to choose from, as the campground
was only about half full.
Although this would be our 6th visit to Sequoia/Kings Canyon, this would
be our first since December 2001. It's obviously one of my favorite places.
However, since I've done a lot of the more well-known hikes, I decided to
try a few more obscure ones this time.
