Aspens on hill

In the morning, we returned to the June Lake Loop and stopped at a small dirt
pullout between Grant Lake and Silver Lake. There's a sign next to a small
trail here, simply saying that hikers and cyclists are welcome. There were
a few nice stands of yellow aspens on the opposite side of the road, along
Rush Creek. Our sights were set on the huge (to me, anyway) grove of yellow
aspens climbing up the hillside before us. It's probably the largest grove
of yellow aspens I've seen in person, although I'm sure there are others that
are bigger (and I plan to seek them out in the coming years).

The grove looked to be near peak, with almost everything yellow and little in
the way of bare trees or green leaves. We walked the short trail into the
grove, and were glad that we did. The light was beautiful, and the sound of
aspen leaves quaking in the wind is calming. The trail inside the grove doesn't
actually go very far inside. We tried walking along the small stream here,
but it got muddy in places and we didn't go far. Still, it was definitely
worth the drive from Mammoth.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, we headed out on a very short
hike to McLeod Lake.
