We got up and packed up our camp, leaving a little before 10am. We stopped at Silver City to use the
showers, then continued the long drive down Mineral King Road. There was just a little more traffic;
we encountered perhaps 15 cars on the way down as opposed to the 10 going up. I was a bit surprised
to see a marmot between Silver City and Atwell Mill; I didn't think they came down so far. We also
saw deer and, further down, a snake crossing the road (and a car stopped behind it, waiting patiently
for it to cross).
Interestingly, we passed
the man in the blue shirt. He was outside his truck, having a heated discussion with a park ranger
near the pay station.
We arrived back in the Bay Area around 4:45pm, after about 5 hours 15 minutes of driving time.
It was a nice trip with some beautiful scenery and a nice camp site. Unfortunately I think we
pretty much covered all the short hikes possible in the area. There are several longer (6 miles or more)
hikes to alpine lakes, but unfortunately the kids can't do them yet. We'll return, but it
probably won't be for several years, after the kids have grown up a bit.
