Two years ago, we'd taken the kids on a trip to Death Valley National Park, followed by
San Diego and Legoland. Recently they'd been bugging us to return to Legoland. And so I
planned this trip to Joshua Tree National Park. The trip would mirror many aspects of that
trip two years ago, including stopping along the way on Friday night before reaching the park.
This time, we decided to take the day off from work and leave the Bay Area before noon.
After some last-minute packing, we were finally off at 11:35am. Because we left relatively
early, there was no traffic even on a Friday, and we reached Valencia after about 4 hours
and 50 minutes of driving (plus another 50 minutes of stopping for gas and food).
It wasn't until we reached Valencia that I remembered that this was where Magic Mountain is
located, a place I visited one and only one time back in high school. In any case, it's a
decent stopover place on the way down south, before most of the southern California traffic.
The hotels are reasonably priced. We found a local restaurant to have dinner sandwiched between
watching the NCAA basketball tournament on TV. I'll have to consider keeping the tournament
schedule in mind the next time I'm scheduling a vacation. It's one of my favorite sporting
events to watch, even if Cal isn't in it.
