In the morning, we packed up our camp. It was a little strange leaving just as everyone
else arrived, but we had exhausted most of the day hikes in the area, and were ready to
leave after our 6th day.
We stopped by the ranger station and our youngest got his junior ranger badge.
As this was July 4th, the station was completely overwhelmed with backpackers
getting their wilderness permits. Next time we visit Mineral King, we'll probably
do a backpacking trip instead, but we'll probably enter via Lodgepole or thereabouts;
that's a much easier drive.
We stopped by Silver City briefly on our way out, then continued down Mineral King
Road. I probably could have picked a better time to leave (it was close to noon now).
I was hoping that most people coming in would have arrived by Thursday night, but there
were quite a few stragglers coming up the road on Friday. We encountered about
30 cars on the way down. Most were fine, although one in particular came flying
around a blind corner way too fast and onto my side of the road. They slammed on
the brakes and veered away to avoid hitting us. Just take it slow!
Our car started acting up again and we had to stop a few times, so we didn't make it back
until about 6:30pm. After this car has taken us over 220,000 miles in 14 years, over
countless dirt and mountain roads and wilderness adventures, it's time to get a new one...
