Despite leaving late, we arrived at the scheduled 7:25am arrival time in Melbourne on December 23rd (having crossed the International Date Line).
Unfortunately we had to go through customs and then claim our bags. Then lug our things to the domestic check-in lines, where we discovered huge lines.
It wasn't clear where we should go, so we flagged down a staffer and he told us the flight we were scheduled on was already closed.
It had an 8:40am departure time and it was already 8:15am. After briefly checking with some other staffers, he pulled us through all
the lines to another staffer who calculated we still had a few minutes for a last-minute check-in. After checking our bags in, she
told us to go directly to the gate before they closed it. So then we had to go through security and...got randomly selected for explosives screening.
I grumbled that we had a flight leaving soon, but the security woman said not to worry, we had plenty of time. After the check came up empty, we scrambled to the gate and made it to the plane just as the last passengers were filing in.
Shortly, we arrived in Hobart, Tasmania, just before 10am - about 24 hours after we'd left our home.
Thankfully our bags made it as well. After picking up a rental car and gingerly getting used to
driving on the left side of the road, we drove into Hobart and our house rental.
