Fly to Iceland

Iceland had been on our list of places to visit for many years, for its scenic beauty. Having completed our trip to Tasmania, it moved up close to the top. While we were on the Overland Track in Tasmania, we got to talking to a couple about Iceland. They asked if we were going to do the Laugavegur Trail. We hadn’t known anything about it at the time, but afterwards we looked it up and decided to do it.

With that in mind, we built our trip around the Laugavegur Trail. In February we tried to book the huts, but coudn’t get exactly what we wanted. There were three problems: (1) the first day would have to be about 15 miles since we couldn't get the second day's hut, (2) one day we couldn’t get a hut and would have to sleep in our tent, and (3) one day we’d have to stay two nights since we couldn’t get our preferred date for the final hut.

However, we decided to go ahead anyway, and continued with the planning. Our next decision had to do with the Ring Road. If we weren’t doing the Laugavegur Trail, we’d probably do the Ring Road. But looking at the schedule it just didn’t leave enough time to do it. So we nixed the Ring Road, for now. Perhaps we’ll come back and do it. However, we still had time for something else. Since Scotland was also on our list of places to visit, and it was close, we decided to add it.

Unfortunately for us, the flight we chose from Scotland back to Iceland (before returning back home) was on Wow Airlines. I say unfortunately because less than a month later Wow Airlines ceased all operations. That meant two things: (1) we weren’t getting our money back from them (although we did eventually get a full refund from our credit card company instead), and (2) we’d have to find a replacement flight. Unfortunately we couldn’t find anything that fit our schedule well. So we ended up having to return to Iceland a day earlier, reducing our time in Scotland.

We did get good news a month before our trip. Someone canceled and we were able to get a hut for the night we’d originally need to sleep in our tent. Since tent camping isn’t allowed between the huts, and I wasn’t really looking forward to sleeping in a tent in a treeless landscape, we decided not to bring our tent at all.

June turned to July, and before we knew it we were busy packing. And then we were off, flying to Rekyjavik.
