The Founders Grove parking lot is probably one of the larger lots in Humboldt
Redwoods State Park. There are bathrooms (though they were out of order
when we were there). The Founders Grove loop trail is pretty short, less than
a mile, though you can combine it (as we did) with the nearby Mahan Loop to
get a slightly longer hike.
You won't have to hike far to reach the Founders Tree. It's essentially at
the start of the hike. Also near the start are pamphlets explaining the numbered signposts
along the loop hike, available for a $1 donation.
Founders Tree
The trail passes by many downed redwood trees. You can either see the
unearthed roots or the rings of a cut cross-section, or both. After
about 0.4 miles, we reached a trail intersection. We turned right to head to the Mahan
Loop. Shortly there's another trail intersection; a path to the right
leads to another parking area along the Avenue of the Giants road.

We continued on the main trail, soon reaching the Mahan Loop. We took the left fork,
then soon came to the Mahan Plaque, which is not much to speak of (just a
commemorative plaque on the ground). We completed the loop, returned to the Founders
Grove Loop, and turned right to complete the loop. To be honest, beyond the Founders
Tree there's not much of interest to this hike. There are nicer sections of forest
on the other hikes we did in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
