Whole books have been written on the subject of evaluating avalanche risk.
I don't know enough to give you sufficient advice in a few paragraphs; I suggest
you find and read those books.
Rangers may be able to give you advice on current avalanche danger, but as
always, you are the only one who can be responsible for yourself. Buying
avalanche probes and beacons isn't good enough -- if you feel that you'll
be exposing yourself to enough risk to require that gear, then you should
take a course to learn how to use them properly.
