Joe, Weihaw, and I met in Saratoga, then carpooled (thanks, Joe) up
highway 9, and down to Big Basin. It's a relatively long drive; the
transportation and the hiking took up most of the day. The ground was
muddy in places from some recent rains, but wasn't too bad. The hike
was also long -- 12 miles in almost 5 1/2 hours. But there were some
good highlights. Almost the entire hike is under redwood trees. The
falls themselves are nice to look at and even touch. There are
actually several falls in succession. The first is the biggest, but
there are others which follow, including one you can take a shower in
(Weihaw tried this until he couldn't stand the cold water anymore).
Definitely a nice hike, but you have to have endurance and the
willingness to make the long drive.
