Hiking Hazards - Cramping

Dehydration causes, among other things, cramping. Another cause of cramping is lack of sodium -- you lose a lot when you sweat. Drinking and eating enough to prevent water and sodium deficit will help prevent cramps. I like to bring along a sports drink in addition to water. I'll usually bring about twice as much plain water as sports drink, but that's a personal choice. The main thing for me is that I get tired of drinking plain water after a while, and it's refreshing (especially later in the day) to drink something slightly sweet.
