Hiking Hazards - Insect-Borne Disease

Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks, which get the disease from deer. Lyme disease is generally not fatal, but it can cause nagging problems for years to come and there is no known cure. Symptoms include blah blah blah. To avoid getting bitten by ticks, cover up your legs. Ticks can't fly, but they can crawl up onto vegetation and fall down as you walk by. In this manner, they can land on your legs, ankles, boots, or even your pack and come to bite you later.

West Nile Virus is transmitted via mosquitoes.
