It was raining again. I can't imagine living in Portland (or anywhere else in the rainy Northwest) --
the rain would drive me crazy.
We stopped by the Niketown store (nothing special) and the Columbia Store to do a little
shopping downtown, before we drove over to Powell's Books. Jean went to check out a cooking
store while I went to the technical book store. The store is filled with nothing but books on
math, science, and computers. I spent the better part of an hour looking at the popular math
section, which is the largest such section I've ever seen. Nowhere else have I seen specific
sections on every branch of math I know of -- discrete math (8-12 shelves), differential equations,
topology, you name it -- each has its own section. And the great thing is, there are used books
right alongside the new books, at a good discount (and mostly in good shape). It seems odd to
visit a city for its book store, but Portland might be one such place to do so. In fact, Powells'
is supposedly the largest independent book store in the country.
We returned to the Hawthorne area, where we ate at a Japanese Bento restaurant. It was still raining. We then
went back to the Pearl District to do yet more shopping before finally starting the trip to the airport. By this
time, it was about 5pm and we had to endure Portland's rush hour traffic. We inched along, but it's not that far
to the airport, and we arrived in plenty of time for our flight.
