Back at the visitor center, we cleaned up a bit, checked out the
gift shop, then started the drive to Seattle. At 4:50pm we started
our drive, once again hindered by slow Washington drivers.
It was sunny as we drove toward 101 and then turned south on 101
toward Aberdeen. Along the way we saw the very depressing sight
of large tracts of forest missing on the hillsides. Loggers had
obviously claimed huge portions of the Olympic hills, probably
stopping only when they reached the edge of the National Park
boundary. Makes me think twice about my fondness for wood furniture.
The coastal fog was now rushing in and it was positively cold
by the time we pulled into a convenience store next to Kalaloch
Lodge. We continued down to Aberdeen, then east to Olympia via
highways 12 and 8. It was 8pm now, and we decided to eat dinner
in Olympia and by chance found a great Thai restaurant. We ordered
4 dishes (soup, salad, and two entrees). When they brought the
food out, we realized we'd ordered way too much. Despite our hunger,
the portions still looked monstrous -- enough for 4 people. But
the food tasted so good and we were so hungry after our 3 days
in the rain forest that we ate it all.
We proceeded north along Interstate 5 to Seattle, checked into
our hotel, and spread all our camping equipment all over our room.
