Your chances of dying from snake bite are pretty low. According to some
estimates, there are about 45,000 snake bites in the United States per
year, less than 10,000 of which are venomous, and the number of deaths is
between 10 and 15 per year. And many snake bite victims are drunk, so you
can imagine a bunch of drunk guys messing around with a snake and paying
the price.
If you see a snake, give it a wide berth. The usual snake encounter is one in
which they see you before you see them, and they slither away from you quickly,
startling you. If you do see a snake, don't sneak up on it.
