Cammy, Jason, Jean and I left the Bay Area round 8pm on a Friday night, headed up towards Woods
Lake campground. The camp is very popular, but doesn't take reservations. I was simply hoping
there would be space, and if not, was ready to go to a nearby campground. I'd had experience
with this before, trying to go to Woods Lake on a Saturday morning one summer, ending up
having to camp at Blue Lakes instead. I was hoping that since it was after Labor Day, it wouldn't
be too crowded.
We ran into minimal traffic in the Bay Area, delaying us about 15-20 minutes. We stopped for another
15-20 minutes along the way, arriving at Woods Lake campground at about midnight. We drove around
the camp, finding that only one of the 25 sites was vacant, camp 11. We looked at the note on
the post and it said that the campground was reserved for one night starting on the 20th. Now,
in my late night stupor, I looked at my watch and saw the date was the 21st. So we took the
camp site. It was only after we were all set up and getting ready for bed that I realized that
the reason my watch said the 21st was that it was just past midnight, and that really, someone
had already reserved this camp site.
I was too tired to just pack up and leave. Besides, there was no guarantee that whoever had
reserved the camp site would return. So I spent the rest of the night tossing and turning under
the light of the full moon,
not getting any sleep at all until past 5:30am, when I decided it was a fair bet that no one would
come and kick us out of the camp. I think I got maybe 2-3 hours of sleep, all of it after the sun
had started to rise.
