While it had been quite cold, perhaps in the high 30s to low 40s, the first night, it was noticeably
warmer the second night. In the morning we had breakfast and packed up camp. We waved good bye
to Woods Lake camp and drove away. There are several stands of aspen trees in and around the
camp sites. They were mostly still green, but should be a great site in about a month.
I knew the trail head for Lake Margaret was just past Caples Lake. I made the mistake of turning
just past the dam, which is still halfway along the lake. The road I turned onto was for a
campground; it's good to know it's there for future reference in case I return and Woods Lake is
full (it always is).
It didn't take long until we reached the Lake Margaret trailhead. You have almost no chance of
turning into it without first passing it by -- especially if you are coming from the Kirkwood
side. From that side you can't even tell there's a road there until you pass it. In any case,
if you are coming from Kirkwood, the trailhead is just past the Kirkwood Inn, on your left. But
I almost guarantee you'll pass it and have to turn around. If you reach the dam you've gone too
far.
We parked in the small dirt parking lot and headed out to Lake Margaret.
