Today I was hoping to get an early start so that I could drive back before
sunset. The morning chill kept me in the tent, though, and I emerged at
7am again. It warmed up rather quickly, though, and I ended up wearing
short sleeves today. While I was breaking camp, Dave came over and chatted
a bit more. He said that he'd been coming to this campground for 40 years,
and he'll usually come about 5 times a year. Despite what my eyes told me,
he said that when he came (a week ago), there was snow all around and that
it had all melted fast. In fact, he said the camp had only been open for
the past two and a half weeks.
After breaking camp, I made the short drive to where I'd done the Asa
Lake hike, and started off on my trek to Arnot Peak.
After returning from the hike, I began the tortuous drive back toward Bear
Valley. After surviving the dirt roads and the narrow roads, I made my
way to Angels Camp where I made a quick stop at Burger King. If anyone
has any restaurant recommendations for Angels Camp, I would love to hear
them. I'm sometimes tempted to drive from Angels Camp to Sonora so I
can eat at El Jardin, but I'm sure there must be some good restaurants at
Angels Camp. Ideas, anyone?
My plan to leave Saturday night to avoid traffic paid off, as I breezed into
the Bay Area in just over 4 hours. I think the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness
is a great place which I'll be visiting again, but I think the drive might
deter me a bit, as well. Next time I'm planning a trip I'll have to
compare it against the much-easier-reached (but probably more crowded)
Emigrant Wilderness.
