Although I'd driven through Tuolumne Meadows on a couple of recent occasions (on
the way to Mammoth), I hadn't actually stayed there since 1999. Mid-September
seemed like a good time to go, but it actually turned out to be quite cold.
The drive from the Bay Area was uneventful, a good thing when many long drives
get bogged down in traffic. We arrived in the afternoon, meeting another
couple and their two young children. After a bit of searching, we settled
on a pair of campsites in the Tuolumne Meadows campground near the Lyell Fork
of the Tuolumne River.
We wanted to pick up some last minute supplies, and maybe some firewood, but the
Tuolumne Meadows store was closed due to a power outage. The Tuolumne Meadows
grill was closed, as well. So we pitched our tents, had dinner, and settled
down for a cold night.
