Saturday morning, we made the 40 minute drive to the eastern part of Lassen to do the
Bathtub Lakes hike.
After the hike, we walked to the edge of Butte Lake. On the other side of the lake is
the edge of the Fantastic Lava Beds. To me, it looked like a giant trash heap -- a huge
pile of dark rubble maybe 30-40 feet high. Browsing the web afterwards, I can see views
of it from Cinder Cone, and it looks quite fantastic indeed. In fact, the 4 mile Cinder Cone trail
is high on my list of hikes to do in the future. I think
Nathan should be ready for it in a
year or two, so expect a report on it by the end of the decade.

We drove back to the camper store at Manzanita Lake and had (of course) ice cream. They even have
a soft serve machine here. It was still mid-afternoon, and we were kind of in limbo. I wanted to
do the Manzanita Lake trail, but I'd read that it was best to do it late in the day, near sunset,
to avoid the crowds. I thought that was a good idea, so we again had an early dinner. It was 6:15pm
by the time we started the
Manzanita Lake trail.
After the hike, we returned to camp and enjoyed a campfire. If you've forgotten to bring
marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers, you can pick it all up at the camper store.
