On getaway date, we packed up our camp and left around 10:30am. We then drove along the main
park road for the first time on this trip. One of the reasons I'd put it off until the
weekend was that there is road construction ongoing. There are warnings that there can be delays
up to 30 minutes. I figured Sunday was my best chance of avoiding that, and it seemed to work,
as we coasted on through past the Devastated Area, past Summit Lake (where I'd camped on my previous
trip), Kings Creek, and on to the trailhead for Terrace Lake. From there, we hiked to
Shadow Lake.
After the hike, we continued along the park road. We pulled into the parking lot for the Lassen
Peak trailhead, where there was a temporary store and gift shop set up in the lot. The old
Lassen Chalet at the southwest park entrance was torn down awhile back; they're building a new
visitor's center there. In the meantime, there's a temporary structure at the Lassen Peak
trailhead. Here, we enjoyed another ice cream before heading back to the Bay Area. We exited the
park through the Southwest entrance, took Highway 89, then turned right onto Highway 36 to head
back to Red Bluff and I-5. In all, it again took about 4 1/2 hours of driving to return.
