Sunday morning we woke up to...rain. We quickly decided to forget about trying to do
any hike today. It was coming down steadily, with no signs of letting up. Snow wouldn't
be so bad; cold rain is worse. After breakfast we packed up and left, taking Highway 140
instead of 120.
This was the first time I've driven on Highway 140 in many years, and certainly the first
since a land slide wiped out a section of road west of the park entrance. There are two
temporary bridges which bypass the washed-out section of road. Based on what I've
seen, those "temporary" bridges may have to last many years. It is not going to be easy to
fix that road. In the meantime, there are stoplights at each end to let traffic flow in one
direction and then the other, so expect delays. Even so, the return trip took about the
same amount of time as our drive to the valley using Highway 120, maybe even a little less.
This probably sounds like a lot of time and effort for just one short hike, but it's probably
par for the course for winter trips. You can never count on the weather cooperating,
especially if you have to reserve in advance.
