Once again we woke to clear, sunny skies. It was also noticeably warmer today.
But after yesterday's ordeal trudging through the snow, I knew I'd have to find something
shorter than the 6 mile hike I had originally planned. I wanted to do something starting
from South Lake, which we'd never visited before. At first I considered Marie Louise Lakes,
about a 4 mile round trip. However, the lakes looked small and off the beaten track, which
would mean another possibly hard trudge through deeper snow. So, eventually I decided that
it would be best to stick to the main, well-used, Bishop Pass trail to Long Lake. The book
I read said it would be about 4.8 miles -- a bit longer than we wanted, but manageable, and
I expected the trail itself to be hard-packed.
So, after breakfast, we made the drive over to the trailhead for the
South Lake to Long Lake hike.
After the hike, we stopped in Bishop for gas and groceries, then returned to the house.
