Originally, I was thinking of hiking to Tamarack Lake and Ralston Lake. This would involve taking
the boat taxi across Echo Lakes. However, since we woke up late I didn't this would be a good idea.
When we'd gone backpacking last year, we'd arrived at the Echo Chalet mid-morning and had a very
hard time finding a parking spot. Now it was Labor Day weekend, so I seriously doubted we would find a spot.
I looked for an alternative and eventually decided on Grass Lake, about a 5 mile hike in the Desolation Wilderness.
After stopping at a grocery store to pick up some food for lunch, we made the drive through South Lake Tahoe and
up highway 89, then drove to the trailhead for the
Grass Lake hike.
