It was warmer this morning, but still overcast. The campground looked even more
empty than before. We got a much earlier start today; in fact the mini-mart was
still closed when we passed it. We continued on, up Kaiser Pass Road again, but stopping
before the one-lane road section. We stopped at the Potter Pass Cut-Off trailhead.
This was a nice-looking trailhead, but I decided that the trail from here would
require more climbing, so I continued on up to the California Riding & Hiking lot,
where we stopped and prepared for a hike to Twin Lakes.
After the hike, we returned to the mini-mart for some ice cream, then back to camp
for a campfire and s'mores. While we were enjoying our campfire, the camp host
came by and we got to talking a bit. He said that the campground was rarely full,
but that tonight was even less full than usual - only 9 of 44 sites occupied.
I filed away this information, knowing that this could be a possibility for a
last-minute trip.
He also said that bears weren't much of a problem here - they were more of an issue
at the other end of the lake. I mentioned to him that we were planning to hike up
to Nellie Lake the next day. He said it was 5 miles each way, which puzzled me a
bit since my trail map indicated it was 3.7 miles. I figured I would mostly trust
the map, though I think the distance was somewhere in between.
