Iceland and Scotland Trip

Day 3 of 18

Monday, July 22nd
Walking Laugavegur street, Harpa Concert Hall

After an exhausting day and a half (there’s a 7 hour time difference from the Bay Area), we sort of seemed to adjust to the time zone. We got up at a reasonable hour and had breakfast, then set out to fully explore the Laugavegur road. We stopped at several stores as we walked along the road. We got some outdoor clothes, found a replacement for my aging gloves, and picked up some stove fuel. Though we’d read there are gas stoves in the huts, we wanted to have a backup just in case.

We stopped at a park with a statue and view of the Althingi Parliament House. One of many walking tour groups we would see that day were walking through the area here. Then we walked over to Harpa Concert Hall, which is an impressive building just finished in 2011. Unfortunately not all the areas inside are accessible unless you are with a tour, but we enjoyed many of the views of the architecture inside and out.

We then returned to Laugavegur. I was lucky enough to find a map of the Laugavegur Trail in a bookstore. It was hidden amongst some other maps. Then we had lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant.

Returning to the house, I took a long nap. Afterwards, we explored Laugavegur in the opposite direction. We had to find Bus Stop #10, where we were supposed to meet our bus the next day for a tour. Eventually we decided it was probably just the bus terminal, though it didn’t have the number 10 anywhere, which confused us.
