On Wednesday morning, we drove to Þingvellir National Park, about 45 minutes from Reykjavik.
It was warm and sunny when we arrived at the large parking lot, then walked over to the
visitor center. We picked up a hiking map there, though we didn't really need it.
We walked out to the view of Þingvallavatn, a large lake just outside the visitor's
center. The lake sits on the Mid-Atlantic Rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic
plates. You can even go scuba-diving in the lake to view the rift under water.
But the effects of the rift are visible above ground, as well. So we did a short day hike to view the rift and falls.
After the hike, we ate lunch at the visitor center cafe (there are pre-packaged sandwiches, drinks,
and snacks). Then we drove about an hour away to Gullfoss, bypassing the popular
Geysir attraction along the way. It was overcast when we reached the falls. There's a
small parking lot at the bottom, but it was full so we went to the huge
lot above. There's a gift shop and cafe here. There was lots of construction going on when
we visited, so there will
probably be more facilities by the time you visit.
We then did a short walk to the falls and to an overlook above the falls.
After visiting the falls, we returned to Reykjavik (about an hour 45 minutes away).
Then it was dinner at Rok. After dinner I checked the weather reports for our
upcoming hike. It looked like rain the next few days.
