We were originally planning to go backpacking, but… At first we were thinking Marble Mountain Wilderness. But as the date grew closer it looked like it would be 90-100 degrees there. So just a few days before I snagged a permit for Yosemite, going to Polly Dome Lakes and Waterwheel Falls. Tioga Pass Road had just opened a few days before, and I started to get reports from people who visited. Snow and stream crossings didn’t seem to be a problem, but I started to get concerned by fallen trees and rampant mosquitoes. I’ve backpacked when mosquitoes were a problem, and it’s no fun. That, combined with the fact that the route wasn’t ideal (it was an out-and-back, and 2 different days of only 3 miles each), led me to decide to cancel at the last minute.
I couldn’t think of any decent backpacking alternatives. Either we were too late for permits, or there was too much snow (from the record snowfall), or it was too hot, or mosquitoes were a problem, or all of the above. I figured our best bet was to just rent a place to stay in and do some day hikes.
We found a place in north Lake Tahoe and started driving late Friday morning. There was already traffic…pretty much everywhere. It wasn’t completely stopped, but it was slow going. With a stop for lunch, it took us about 5 hours and 15 minutes to get there.
After dropping off our bags, we drove over to do a short hike/walk at
Stateline Lookout.
We had dinner in Incline Village, then went back to the rental house.
