It got quite cold that night. It had been around 80 degrees during the day, but
at 7am it was just 37 degrees -- and that was inside the tent. Outside, it must
have dipped below freezing, as water in our bottles were partially frozen. It
warmed quickly after the sun rose, however. Three hours later, it was 65 degrees
in the tent. We packed up and then went on a hike to the top of
Sierra Buttes.
After the hike, we decided to take a different route home, one which wouldn't be
so winding. We turned left onto Highway 49 and then south on Highway 89 toward
Truckee. As we did so we passed through a large flat valley which we'd seen from
Sierra Buttes earlier that day. We had hypothesized it might have been Nevada,
but we were wrong. That's one more mountain range over.
Traffic was horrible. It was clear sailing back to Auburn. Took us a little
over two hours to get there, about the same time as it took via the other route.
But then the typical Tahoe weekend return traffic snarled traffic on 80 near
Sacramento. It was worse than usual. An accident on 680 made it even worse,
adding up to 2 hours of delays. Despite leaving at 4:15, we didn't get home until
11:30pm (stopping for dinner). That's life in the Bay Area these days. At least
we can get away from it all once in a while by visiting a beautiful place like
the Lakes Basin.
