I had been so busy during the week that I hadn't had time for my
customary pre-backpacking hair cut. So I got it cut real short
at a Mammoth Lakes hair salon. Then we were off to the Mammoth
Lakes visitor's center to pick up our backpacking permit. While we'd
made reservations months earlier, you have to pick up the actual
permit in person.
The visitor's center was busy with lots of people in the gift shop,
talking to rangers, etc. We talked to the permit ranger, who was
very friendly and helpful. I asked them a little bit about possible
camping destinations on the trip. I appreciated that the rangers didn't bat
an eye when they found out our two young sons were coming with us; in
fact, they sounded very encouraging.
After lunch and a nap, we went off on a short easy hike. I originally
was thinking of Sotcher Lake, in Devils Postpile National Monument.
However, I didn't want to deal with taking the shuttle bus there.
Instead, we decided to repeat a hike we'd done 8 years earlier,
the hike to
TJ Lake.
After the hike, we returned to our rental house and finished packing our
backpacking food into our four bear canisters. I was glad we more or less
made it all fit (leaving our first night's dinner outside the boxes).
We still had to finalize the rest of our gear, but the food is always
a major task.
