Nathan was in no shape to do any hikes today, so it was a good thing today
was a transition day. After breakfast (without Nathan), we checked out of the
lodge and drove down to Mazama Village to do some laundry. There are only
3 washing machines and 2 dryers here; thankfully for us they were all available
when we arrived.
After laundry and picking up some souvenirs from the gift shop, we left Mazama Village
around 1:20pm. We now headed north, out of the park, then up Highway 97. After a few
brief stops, including one for gas (Oregon still insists on full-service after all
these years), we made our way up Highway 20 to Sisters. As this was the last city
before we entered the mountains, we stopped here for groceries. Rays Food Place is a
full sized supermarket, and we found pretty much everything we'd need for camping the
next three nights.
After picking up groceries, it was another hour via highways 20 and 126 to reach
Paradise Campground near McKenzie Bridge. We could have instead taken Highway 242,
but that is a winding scenic road that, although it is a more direct route, probably
takes a little longer.
We reached Paradise Campground around 6:35pm and marveled at the beautiful sight of
towering moss-covered trees above us. The camp was nearly
full. The camp is next to the McKenzie River. Though our site wasn't right next to
the river, we could easily hear the river in the background. After setting up camp
and having dinner, we had a good night's sleep to the sound of the river.
