Oregon Trip

Day 3 of 8

Sunday, July 17th
Crater Peak and The Pinnacles

We debated going on the boat tour to Wizard Island, and then hiking to the summit. We hadn't made reservations, but about 20 slots are available on each boat 24 hours before (you can reserve in a kiosk at the lodge or in a gift shop near the park entrance). Eventually we decided it was too much hassle. It would require driving to the Cleetwood Cove trailhead (about half an hour drive), then hiking downhill to the boat dock (a steep 1 mile downill), taking the boat (half hour if you take the shuttle, longer if you take the tour), hiking to the summit and back, then returning on the shuttle (3 hours later) and hiking and driving back. It would basically consume most of the day - about 6-7 hours in total. We may do it on a future trip, but this time we decided to stick to "normal" day hikes.

After breakfast at the lodge, we drove down to the grocery store at Mazama Village (about 10-15 minutes away). The lodge doesn't have pack lunches, and we had decided the Rim Village food wasn't a good option, so the grocery store was our final option (Annie's restaurant at Mazama Village is another option, but they don't provide pack lunches either - only pizza or salad to go). Unfortunately the grocery store isn't great for lunch, either. There were slim pickings for sandwich fixings - white bread, a few sandwich meats, imitation cheese slices, and no lettuce or tomatoes. We did the best we could. Next time, I would consider buying food in a grocery store before reaching the park, and storing it in a cooler (we had our cooler with us, since we were car camping later, anyway). You can buy ice at the Mazama Village grocery store.

We now made the short drive to the Vidae Falls picnic area to start the hike to Crater Peak.

After the hike, we drove further up Rim Drive, then turned right and drove to the end of the road to the Pinnacles Overlook to hike the short Pinnacles Trail.

After returning to the lodge, I noticed a good sunset coming and took a few pictures from just outside the lodge.
