It did not seem to get as cold as the weather forecast predicted. The
weather sites I had viewed had predicted in the low 50's during the day
and around 35 at night. But it seemed like it was more like 40 at night
and 60's during the day.
Today we were planning to do several short day hikes. We started off by
driving back down Mattole Road, then up the Avenue of the Giants to our
first hike, to
High Rock.
After High Rock, we headed north on the Avenue of the Giants for about 5 or
6 miles. We parked at the French Grove trailhead and had lunch before
doing the hike at
French Grove.
After French Grove, we returned south on Avenue of the Giants and hiked the
Founders and Mahan Loop.
Next up, we drove the short distance south to the park visitor's center.
There's a small gift shop here with books, calendars, and maps. There are
interpretive displays. There's also the Travel Log - basically an RV
carved out of a redwood tree made back in 1917. You can't climb inside,
but you can look at it and read about it. We perused the displays, then
bought a park map. The staff assured me that the seasonal foot bridge
across Bull Creek that I wanted to use tomorrow was in place.
There's no food for sale at the visitor center. We tried looking for some
snacks in Weott, but the one place we found was closed (possibly permanently).
Next up, we returned to Mattole Road and stopped near the beginning and did
the short
Rockefeller Loop.
We returned to camp and had an early dinner. Afterwards, a ranger came by
and was warning people about a bear he'd just seen and scared off. There
are bear boxes at each campsite, and you're instructed to put all your food
in it or your vehicle.
After dinner, we took a short walk around
Albee Creek Campground.
